BORNEO WILDERNESS

JUNGLE EXPEDITION

Never-ending wilderness. probably the hardest jungle on the earth.

Place: Kalimantan Borneo, Indonesia.
Environment: Jungle.
Activities: Trekking, rafting.
Goal: Cross Borneo Island from coast to coast.
Time: 18 days. Possible to combine with our Indonesian expeditions.

This expedition start in Samarinda - ugly, dusty city where we prepare supplies. From Samarinda, we travel 2 days and 2 nights on local passenger ship. Watching the jungle, sunrises on the Mahakam River. It's relaxing, romantic time before the hardships start...

Last large village we visit is Long Bagun. It has strong atmosphere of wild west frontier town. Place where gold miners, river sailors, and some Dayaks meet and buy supplies before coming back to the jungle.

WILD RIVERS STAGE: River ships cannot travel upriver from Long Bagun, the river is too strong for them. So we hire private motorboat. A small, but powerful one. Two 150-horsepower engines are just a necessity for this stage. We need to go nearly 100 miles upstream by waterfalls, cruising slowly between rocky walls of canyons. This is a "adventure in Chalcon's style".

We stop for a night in a small village Long Apari. It's time to hire guide and porters to carry our equipment. Time for buy your last beer at enormous price, drink it, and forget about the civilization comforts.

JUNGLE EXPEDITION STAGE: This is the challenge what you wanted! We need to cross Miller's Range on middle Borneo. To do that, we need to trek in mud and swamps.

We need to cut branches on our way. We need to sleep in a jungle, beware of poisonous snakes and spiders. We need to find our way thru the impassable wilderness. That's all because we wanted the real adventure.
